Type C / visa-free 90/180
Netherlands short stay (Schengen)
Dutch short stays use Netherlands government visa guidance and, where outsourced, VFS Global or embassy desks. IND rules matter more for residence; short visits still sit on the shared Schengen day count.
Dutch missions, VFS, and IND — who does what
For most visa-required travellers, short-stay lodging happens at a Dutch representation or a VFS Global centre acting for the Netherlands. The Netherlands and You visa theme pages point you to the correct channel for your country of residence.
The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) is the main authority for residence permits and many long-stay products. Do not file a tourist Type C expecting IND to convert it into work or study permission after arrival.
Netherlands-specific caveats
The Caribbean parts of the Kingdom are not interchangeable with Schengen entry to the European Netherlands. Confirm which territory you are entering and which visa product applies.
Guarantee or sponsor forms (when used) have Dutch formats and supporting ID/income expectations. A casual email invitation is often not enough if the mission checklist names a formal guarantee.
Pitfalls at Dutch VACs and embassies
Amsterdam hotel density tempts travellers to book refundable rooms that disappear before the decision — keep continuous proof of lodging covering the stated dates. Inconsistent Schengen itineraries that barely touch the Netherlands can conflict with main-destination filing.
VFS collects biometrics and documents; the Dutch mission still decides. Asking centre staff for a “guaranteed approval” is not how the process works.
Schengen 90/180 and Dutch visits
Nights in the Netherlands consume the shared short-stay allowance — as a rule, up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Area. Leaving for a weekend outside Schengen does not always “reset” the rolling window.
Cross-check multi-country calendars with a 90/180 tool, then confirm nationality requirements on official Dutch visa pages before you pay VFS or embassy fees.

- Apply via the Dutch mission or VFS channel that covers your residence when a visa is required
- Stay within the shared Schengen short-stay limit (90 days in any 180-day period) unless another status applies
- Do not treat an IND residence product and a Schengen Type C as interchangeable
Documents
- Valid travel document meeting Schengen validity themes used by Dutch border control
- Short-stay visa application lodged through the Dutch embassy/consulate or VFS centre for your area
- Type C visa if your nationality needs one to enter the European Netherlands
- Travel medical insurance for the visa application period the Dutch checklist specifies
- Dutch-format guarantee or invitation pack when you rely on a host in the Netherlands
- Proof of funds, return travel, and hotel or host address matching the stated itinerary
Fees, stay, and work
| Fees | Visa fees track EU short-stay rules; VFS or other centres may charge an additional service fee. Read the current figures on Netherlands and You and the page for your local Dutch representation. |
|---|---|
| Timeline | Appointment availability at Dutch missions and VFS sites varies by city. Apply inside the advance window your local Dutch visa page lists, and allow extra time in busy summer months. |
| Stay | Expect the familiar Schengen short-stay frame — generally 90 days out of any 180 — unless your Dutch visa sticker or entry conditions say less. |
| Work rights | Short stay in the Netherlands does not authorise taking a Dutch job. Work or long residence usually needs IND permission under a national route. |
| Path to PR | Not a permanent residence route on its own. |
